Parkinson’s disease is
a progressive degenerative brain disorder, which can leave patients completely
debilitated. Most common in men, Parkinson’s affects around 50,000 Americans
each year. With no current cure for this disease, treatment is used to help
patients have a healthy/ active lifestyle. The symptoms of this disease mostly
involve the physical attributes of a patient, but there are a few mental
effects as well. In the later stages of Parkinson’s patients typically become
less responsive to the treatment they are given, which is when therapy becomes
important. The Michael J. Fox Foundation,
the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, the National Parkinson’s Foundation, and
the Paul Ruby Foundation for Parkinson’s Research are only just a few of the
many foundations that are conducting research in order to find a cure for
Parkinson’s Disease. After my phone interview with one of the lead researchers
at the National Parkinson’s Foundation, I learned that eventually a cure will
be found, but after a long period of time.
